Workplace Sexual Harassment: New Variants through the Pandemic

And you thought that I don’t have to meet that male colleague anymore, I don’t need to travel with my boss anymore, I can stay away from the bus commute – I’m Safe! Are you kidding me?! And you thought it was only the Covid-19 virus that could mutate itself, that could have many variants, and could change with changing times? Think again! Unofficial data reveals that workplace sexism, harassment, discrimination, bullying, and sexual offenses have been the way of life for close to 90% of women in India, only less than a third of them even talk about it and a fraction of them report it (primary research conducted by Durga India). Yet, in India, we have the most powerful, holistic, and well-thought-through feminist laws against workplace harassment (POSH Act of 2013). It all does not add up.

Planned cities started in Britain with the Garden City movement. The main idea was to build cities with limited population with sufficient amenities and environmental considerations to do away with the ills of Industrial Revolution, with squalor, filth and chimney smoke. It was taken to a different height by the former Soviet Union. They built new cities to accommodate industry, academic institutions and sometimes agriculture. The same model was followed by other East European countries in the socialist block (especially Poland) and even China (in the fifties of the last century).

The study investigates into the explanatory factors for the variation in COVID-19 infections and deaths reported in Indian states as on March 31, 2021. The analysis considered the following state-wise data: proportion of people living in cities with population density higher than 5,000 persons per sq. km, per capita public health expenditure, health infrastructure per thousand population, per capita NSDP, and proportion of aged (above 60) people.
